BF recently landed his new job as Programmer II in an international IT company. We used to work under the same IT company, BF as one of the pioneer developers and me as the only software QA Specialist, but the company sort of fell apart and it was time to move on for our sanity's sake. Fast forward to his first payday, I kept in mind that BF promised that we would dine in a new restaurant. Of course, all I could think about at first was sushi! pizza! or other staples forever embedded in my mind.
So I cleared my head and thought about cuisines that I take for granted most of the time, since my passion for Thai food isn't exactly that developed, I decided that we try Mexican food this time. Surprisingly, BF gave his elusive nod of approval.
Chili Con Carne (Bowl)
Php 148.99 or $ 3.41
Described in their website as "a hearty stew of beans and meat. Comes with tortilla chips". Their Chili Con Carne bowl is enough to feed two hungry pig out buddies, like Chum and I! I asked the waitress first on how big the cup and bowl sizes were, and opted for the bowl size. I knew BF was hungry but said he won't eat since he'll be heading to their company's Christmas party that night.
Knowing BF, even though he says he won't, HE DEFINITELY WILL. It came in hot with plenty of toppings like onions, cheese, and what I believe is sour cream. We loved topping off our crunchy tortilla chips with their mildly spiced Chili Con Carne that BF ordered for more side tortilla chips. Size and taste-wise it was great, I loved how rich and flavorful the Chili Con Carne was and it was definitely a great order for such an affordable price.
The only thing I could think of to make their Chili better is to offer their customers different levels of spiciness depending on the customer's preference. I sure would have loved mine spicy as hell. :)
Ground Beef Taco
Php 89.00 or $ 2.03
I've seen too many taco posts in the last few weeks that I decided to kill my curiosity and ordered their taco as well! Described in their website as "crispy corn or soft flour folded tortilla with your choice of filling with cheese, refried beans, lettuce, fresh salsa and sour cream." Well, mine came really bursting with fillings!
We polished off the Chili Con Carne first and then I diverted my attention to this. Truth be told I was hesitant to try it first because I kept thinking that the taco shell would crack into smithereens after I take just a teeny tiny bite. Of course, the Ground Beef Taco would not disappear if I just look at it, so I took my first awkward bite, aware of what might happen next.
Surprisingly, nothing fell apart, the taco shell still intact no matter where I bite. Before each bite I would put on some of the hot white sauce they gave and relish each wonderfully delicious bite. Now I know why I have been seeing tacos in too many food blogs for so long.
As I'm typing this post, I'm fighting the itch to drag BF (Thank you, you're the best BF in the whole wide world!) into Mexicali again and try more of their affordable and yet very filling and scrumptious food. Have you dined in Mexicali or any other Mexican themed restaurants? What are your Mexican food staples, must haves and cravings? I'd like to know!
